The bike has great potential, I’m sure.    It will be an interesting project. Remember to check the cam chain tensioner before attempting to start the engine.

is that a Yamaha next to the KZ?   Which model is it?

Thanks for the tips on the cam chain tensioner.
The bike beside the KZ is an 07 Yamaha FJR. Great bike, my daily driver.

I noticed the 07 FJR. I have two, 2006 with 265k miles, and a 2013 with a paltry 60k. Great bikes!

I've only ridden one FJR. I can't say I liked the seat.

You are right, the stock seat sucks.
Sargent seat and handlebar risers on mine, much more comfortable and more upright riding position.
