Just something I've been curious about- I've been reading about the reported oil issues on the early KZ's and the change to a deeper oil sump later on. Also that KZ deep sumps are nearly impossible to find, while the deep sumps for the ZN1300 Voyager are relatively plentiful.

However, I read that the Voyager sumps won't work on the early KZ1300s because of clearance issues, mostly with the exhaust pipes. MY question- what's the difference? From what I've seen (or at least, THINK I've seen) of the two deep sumps in questions, I can't spot any differences. Maybe I'm missing something, but does someone have a side-by-side comparison of the two? Or at least photos of each of the two deep sumps? Thanks.

I've been looking for these too.

Voyagers have a different exhaust system that doesn't fit KZs. I know this because I once bought Voyager exhaust headers and found they wont fit my static KZ engine.

It may be that the deep sump wont fit some aftermarket exhaust systems. I think the DG exhaust meant you had to ditch the centre stand so may also have clearance issues with the deep sump?

I would hope that K would have tried to reuse as many components as they could across both models.

I'm in the process of buying a deep sump at the moment. Once I have it I will post pictures and details of whether or not it fits a KZ with a standard exhaust system.

Hello All:

The response below is not to single anyone out, because it applies to this post I thought I would address this to the forum as a whole.

When posting questions about parts that interchange, it would be great to state what model you have, so that we can lend quicker and more accurate assistance. In the end it saves us a lot of time, and prevents excess back and forth.

Two points come to mind.

1: Under your profile, within the signature area, you can place notes that include your model and year. This way it gets stated at each post, and the persons lending assistance can readily identify that needed info.

2: Having your state, or province listed is good so that we know what general area of the globe you reside. This way we can provide other sources or contacts that may be more knowledgeable. (this too can be posted in your profile.)

Regards.

Todd.

Hi

If you fit a deep sump to your KZ you can use the standard exhaust system and also the aftermarket Predator exhaust system (UK). Don't know about any others though :)

If you use the DEVIL as well as the MCG (which is indeed a replica of the DEVIL) you also need to get rid of tha main-stand.

Searching the parts diagrams it appears the large oil pan/sump had one part number irrespective of which model it was fitted to- Kz, Zg or Zn. # 49034-5005.
On my B2 , it was sold with the small pan but was available with the large one also.
Looking at the parts diagram for that bike it shows two different exhaust part numbers for header pipes. By that I mean - left hand header pipe for 1980 A2 # 490701021, SAME PART FOR THE B2 is 490701102. And here is the interesting bit- the right hand header pipe for both bikes is the same number # 490701102. I would assume that would be because of the different oil pan fitted.
I have a large oil pan to fit , but engine is still out of the frame. But I think I will have trouble with the stock exhaust . I bought a selection of U- bends sometime ago to match up to the 6 mufflers from Pipe masters- which are on the bike at present.
Time will tell once the exhaust goes back on and wont clear the sump.
