Bill, yes when I got her she was all there, but it was a case of everything off, stripped, plated, polished, painted or chromed.
Not sure how an owner can just let a good honest bike slowly rot away - crazy really
Still I'm happy with the way she looks and runs now.
Cheers Tim

I have to confess, i do really like the look of the CBX engine - but my weapon of choice remains my Z13 :cheer:

Hi Tim,

Why do you prefer the 1300? I rode a CBX in 1979 and was not overly impressed. At the time I was riding my KZ900. Didn't Honda detune the CBX after 1979? How much did it change the bike?

Thanks

Bill

Here's the weird thing.... I used to love the look of the CBX engine, especially compared to the KZ1300. After tearing mine apart, though? I think my opinion has changed.

The CBX motor still looks okay, but it's too wide, two square. They chopped the alternator and.... whatever's usually on the other side of the crankshaft off, which makes the top look even wider. Pair that with a fuel tank that's extremely wide, but STILL not wider than the engine, and you end up with a bike that looks like a little kid wearing his parent's shoes. Add that to the fact that it's only 1000 cc, and the idea that the entire bike is an engineer patting himself on the back, and I'm not as impressed as I once was.

The 1300 motor, on the other hand, is HUGE, but it hides its bulk well. People knock the styling of the KZ1300, but it's really pretty genius. The tank fairs right into the engine, disguising the width. The lines are simple, direct, not flashy. The bike is wide, but you can't tell from 90% of the angles. Yeah, the radiator is a bit of an afterthought, and it'd be nice to see the pipes better, but overall it's a bigger cc bike hidden in a much more understated package.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.

As for de-tuning the engine, Honda was good for that. They did the same thing to the original Goldwing after three years. They hacked the top end off the '77 motor by messing with the cams in order to help the low-end grunt of the '78s. Consensus is that they hacked off the top end and... didn't do much to the bottom end. There's a definite powerband on the early models that kicks in at 4 or 5K. The 78s and 79 don't have this.

I have not been on this forum all that long, but this is one great thread !....We all love our 1300's but it's also very neat to look inside everyone's shop to see what else is lurking in the shadows ! O.K. ,....I think it's safe to say that there are few (if any) 20 year old's on this forum. I see, (as I am)....life long gearheads, with a passion for keeping "yesteryear" alive ! Right or wrong...that's what we do,and no one is going to change us ! The bikes I see on this thread ...bring back MANY fond memories of days gone by.What is also very interesting...
about these classic old bikes ,is how long we've had them .... and how we acquired them, and the (sometimes SAD state of condition we got them).
Makes for great reading ! Seeing the post by TONTO with the liquid cooled 2-stroke Suzuki , brought back alot of memories for me !
I worked as a Kawasaki tech from 79' - till 89' at Kawasaki of Toledo..... of course as you can imagine, the old bikes of the 70's were getting old and tired.... so, I spent a great deal of my time sitting in front of a "Kwik Way" boring bar, boring ,and honing. and fitting pistons,as customers back then, were trying to keep the old triples going as long as they could ! (man,I miss those days) when you did not have to spend a bunch of time un-wrapping plastic ...before you could BEGIN working on the bike ! Thanks to everyone for posting pictures of their"OTHER BIKES"
cause I really enjoyed those days (which is why I chose that career path back then) For the last 20 plus years I have been making my living as a heavy equipment mechanic.....but still have my garages full of bikes !....................tony :)
I will post some of my other bikes... but there is alot of them...and acquiring more all the time !
