Not a KZ, but a 2006 FJR 1300 Rally Bike with 270k on the clock RR

Another fun ride to the South county and a visit to Jalama Beach on the central Kali Coast.
In Pismo Beach, saw a gas station at $7.75 per gallon o' diesel. Wowzers! But please don't crap on my post with political comments.

It was a day of riding!

Sometimes, it's fun to ride a 'modern' bike although KrZy8 is now 2 decades old. For an old gurl, she's still 'tight' and 'light' in feel at the bars and loose to let the rev's fly. KrZy8 has top flight aftermarket suspension, always fresh. Burns no oil, even after all these miles. Ok, confession time, this is 2nd engine, 1st one got sanded cylinder walls when the 'only shop I trusted' left vacuum lines open and she sucked 6 miles of dirt road daily for years.

Second engine has well past 250k tho, IIRC..

Anyway, to the little video.

To what do you attribute the FJR’s amazing engine durability?  Do you change the oil more frequently than the schedule calls for?  Do you use any particular brand and grade of oil?   Is the bike ‘long legged’ in top gear?

Fabulous views in your video.  Did you have a close look at the windmill?  That was in a nice looking town.
What other bikes were riding with you this time?  Does any of your friends own one of the current Gold Wing 1800’s ?   I’m fascinated by those!

The FJR platform is simply robust and produces medium-high power for the displacement of 1300 cc's. The valve train is rock solid with bucket under cam and small shim size, low mass. In developmental stages, Yamaha engineers were to design with an engine that would out perform and out last the venerable Wing flat 6.

I change oil every 3k, use high quality filters. Air filters looked at every 6k miles. The bike regularly sees bursts to redline, but is never held WFO for extended periods of time. I allow a max of 2 minutes start up idle time, and never jump right onto the expressway until engine has achieved heat soak normalization.

Occasionally, will find a twist section of, low speed, then simply run 1st and 2nd in the upper rpm band, varying throttle on/off to seat, unseat rings and eliminate any potential carbon forming deposits.

Other bikes currently in road shape is the kz, a bmw r69s and r60/2, a 690 KTM with full knobbies, a 91 Hd Ultraclassic (FLHTCU). The second Kz is almost ready for test ride. The 3rd Kz still is longing for the lift and some care. The 78 Yamaha 125 Enduro gets a litte ride time, but mostly around the ranch.. too small and underpowered for any of the road around here..
