I won't bias opinions with my own comments, at this time. 
Note: It was time consuming enough taking, and sizing these photos so they are in no specific order. I'll explain later !

......and this confirms what I have suspected all along:  Not the first time this engine has been apart.
An aftermarket head gasket !
  I was about to wipe-off the last of the "white/hardware store" silicone when I thought I should take a picture of it !   "Coated" on both sides (It wasn't leaking ! )

I recognize the mechanics thumbs. They've shown up in many pics. LOL.
Wow, what a mess. Glazed cylinder walls, no crosshatching. Probably seal pretty good, but no oil grooves for lubricating/cooling.- bad.
Carbon pitted exhaust seats. - running on the rich side?Exhaust valves tight so the valve seat pressure to light to clean off the carbon, my guess..
How do you bend camshaft cap bolts?? Not pulling the camshaft down parallel to the bearings? Rooky move and the consequences, camshaft caps  not fully seated.
Camshafts covered in rust (iron oxide) Good way to gouge the camshaft caps. Doesn't he know what polishing paper is??
Camshaft drive chain tracking off to one side on the tehsioner roller. This can happen with a loose chain.
Carbon buildup in the cylinder head -- Pistom ring blowby, dirty engine oil, no attention to detail. When your oil turns black, somethings up. Dirty engine oil turned a dark brown is ok. When it goes black, that's carbon. Almost every diesel engine running ends up with black oil due to blowby. I had one tractor on the farm - a John Deere 4440 that NEVER had oil turn black and for the life of me. I never understood. Maybe it had gapless piston rings??
White silicone - could be Threebond 1211 - a highly recognized sealant used by many automotive manufacturers. The trick to use if you decide to use one of the aftermarket gaskets is to use a proper sealant and apply in beads around all of the ports/openings to be sealed, then install the gasket and mating part, then pull down the mating surfaces just enough for parallel contact and stop doing up the joint. Wait 2-3 hours for a partial cure, then complete the torqing sequence. These instructions come with Threebond or Yamabond as I remember which. I was never aware of this before looking into engine sealants last year. Just shows you what you don't know and why it's worth the extra 3 minutes to READ THE INSTUCTIONS !!

Since I know "those thumbs", I know this engine is in good hands.
