Way too Stiff Carb Diaphragms
1 week 1 day ago
Check this out.
Some markings. Not sure what they mean.
But these are way too stiff.
recall KawBoy from Kz1300.com mentioning he had some stiffies too.
I'd not seen any of the other diaphragms I had beeing too stiff..
Until now.
Wonder if anyone has a clue who sold these..
So as to not buy!

I think a UK company was selling them. Lots of reports of being way too stiff - I think they were called Legend Motorcycles but I could be wrong
1980 KZ1300 B2 Touring/A2
1980 CBX1000-A
1990 ZZ-R1100 C1

Re: Way too Stiff Carb Diaphragms
3 days 10 hours agoI bought a set from Legend Motorcycles listed on EBay. KZ1300 Carb Diaphragms US $20.18 each. REALLY nice subtle material. BUT there's one thing wrong with them. The ear that locates the diaphragm in the carb body is not indexed properly. It's off by about 20 degrees. If you cut off the ear and install it's fine. Throttle pistons free fall under gravity. It's a beautiful thing.I think a UK company was selling them. Lots of reports of being way too stiff - I think they were called Legend Motorcycles but I could be wrong
I talked to Legend Motorcycles about the issue and they told me they have them manufactured in batches of 300. They said they would address the issue on the next order.

Re: Way too Stiff Carb Diaphragms
3 days 6 hours agoInteresting. I just purchased diaphragms from Zed-Parts, as I know what their product looks and feels like as compared to the 'stiffies' shown above. Guess I'll have to buy a couple from Legend Motorcycles to see what they look and feel like too. Wouldn't it be a kick of both Legend MC and Zed-Parts sourced from the same manufacturer?I bought a set from Legend Motorcycles listed on EBay. KZ1300 Carb Diaphragms US $20.18 each. I just ran across this tonight... Any chance the diaphragm was 'upside down' as i found on this one tonight?

As for the question- Everything about the diaphragm was correct except that when they punched the 4 holes to mount the diaphragm to the throttle plunger, they punched off clock by about 20 degrees.
And No, they were not upside down. There's a sealing ridge on the one side that engages with the carb body groove. There are many reports on the web talking about the fact that these diaphragms from this supplier had this problem and THEY came up with the resolve to just remove the tab and install. Works just fine.
When you hold the carb up side down, the throttle plungers fall open, then when you flip them over right side up, the throttle plungers fall closed. That's how I check them to ensure there's no binding.
One could argue that it's just as easy to open the plungers with your finger and if they fall under gravity, they're good but how much pressure did it take to lift them? Gravity is my answer and I'm sticking to it.
