fuel level sensor

There is a plastic cup that covers the fuel level sensor on the bottom of the gas tank. It has its own drain line.
Is this really necessary? Did Kawasaki expect the sender unit would leak? Just curious really.

I have been running mine without one for the past 6 months or so and haven't had a issue.
