I somehow managed to put diesel in my old KZ1300 today. The gauge was sitting at just over half, I was going to go up some B roads so I thought I’d better top up while I had the chance, because the 1300 is a greedy beast for petrol. Set off up the road, and within a mile or so it starts miss firing a bit. Looked in the mirror and I was leaving a smoke screen behind me. I knew straight away I had put diesel in it because it smelled like an old truck. The amazing thing was it still ran, it wouldn’t tick over but if I kept the revs up it didn’t cut out. Headed straight home, it wasn’t too bad while I was still on country roads but the trip through town down to my house was a touch nerve racking. I've drained the tank and put in some fresh petrol, I’ll go out later and fill it up - with petrol this time - and see how it runs. Silly old buffer

Better sniff the engine oil and see if there was any washdown past the rings as I expect there was. My Dad filled up a panel truck at a gas station and apparently the tanker truck had off loaded 10,000 gallons of diesel in to the regular tank. Wiped out has piston rings. Just saying.

I did the opposite with my 96 diesel Dodge. Put 1/2 tank of petrol in.. It was idling at the time and getting louder and louder. WTFO, Mobil gas station had green handle for regular gas not diesel!

I nearly got caught out when we visited family in the States & hired a car a couple of years back as the colours are the opposite in Europe (green for petrol & black for diesel) lol.
Mind you I did get caught out myself a couple of years back where a forecourt, just to confuse matters, had different shades of blue for regular diesel & petrol. I was in a hurry &  filled my diesel work van with petrol. I got about a mile down the road before the engine started to sputter then stopped. I guessed quite quickly what I'd done & luckily it did no damage, apart from a wasted £100 tank of petrol & £200 for the miss-fuelling guy in his van to do his stuff. I always said that it took a special kind of stupid to miss-fuel a vehicle then I go & do it myself  In my defence it was the first time in 35 years lol.
