To chime in on this, I went with a Rick's starter recently and before I found this post thought I'd just swap it out quickly. Nope.
Taking the cable off the solenoid was the only way and I also had to pull the engine cover, just couldn't get the gears to slip in.
All that being said, back together and the motor itself works amazing and I swear it's cranking the engine over faster, starts are easier for me. Paired on my 79 with an Odyssey AGM15LMJ Battery (my first one lasted 12 years)
