I'm going to have to look into the coils anyway. They've definitely been messed with (if the electrical tape wrap on all the leads are any indication). In addition, all the wires in and out of what's supposed to be a resistor are just pigtailed into a wire nut. That will need looking at at some point, but it runs, so we can leave it alone for now.
I'm going to check compression first, but I'm probably going to have to go carb diving. I'm a bit scared of what I'm going to find- the PO has told me he's been in there before. I just hope his tuning skills are better than his electrical skills...
Oh yea. And the boots are going away.
(I also scored a 160mph speedo off eBay. Paid more than I wanted to, but it did go for less than I've seen them go, so... win? Nearly had an A1 horn cover too, but was outbid by a dollar with 1 second to go. No biggie. I like the look of the A2 cover better anyway.)

Hm.... thanks for that.
I want to see if I can figure out what coils are actually ON mine. If the resistor is already bypassed, I wonder if it's got the "right" coils on it already... who knows? We shall see. Thanks for the link!

You can find out easily by getting an Ohm value for the ones currently on it. If I remember correctly, the AW-82 TRI coils should be 2.4-2.6 ohm. You should be able to find the Ohm value without removing the coils.
Anything in that range or above would tell you that the coils aren't original. Can't remember original's value but I think it's in the 1-2 ohm range.

How do you measure that? Is it from spark plug wire to spark plug wire? (Played with coils a few years ago, but electrical issues aren't my forte.)

I hear ya electricals have always given me a headache!
I haven't done this myself, but I don't think I would be far off. I would first try testing the + and - (ground) on the coils with a multimeter. You should be able to just connect the tester leads to the wires going in and out of them.
If that doesn't give you the reading I would next try the + wire and then the plug cap. Not very many combinations to go through so eventually you should get a reading
