Z1300 Pinion Gear Comparison

Z1300 and KZ1300 Pinion Gear Comparison

Last Update 8/22/08

This page shows some pictures documenting the differences between the 1979 and early 1980 'small' pinion gear versus the late 80' and newer 'large' pinion gear.  These just show the pinion gears and coupling but there's a 'small' and 'large' spline drive shaft also.  Although a drive shaft, coupling and pinion gear could all be swapped as a unit from any year bike to any other year bike as far as I can tell, generally, the small spline drive shafts and pinion gears were used on the 79' and 80' bikes.  From about mid 80' model year or possibly it was 81' and up they went to a larger pinion gear and large spline drive shaft.

The preferred swap is to take a large drive shaft, coupling and pinion gear out of a newer bike and swap them into an older bike that has the smaller pieces.  I don't think there was much trouble with these 'smaller' parts but turbo kits were pretty popular back then and maybe Kawasaki thought it would be smarter to beef these parts up a bit so they did.

The Voyagers use similar parts in their drive-train but none of the ZN1300 parts can be swapped with the KZ1300 parts as far as I know.  If I can get a small and large KZ drive-shaft along side a Voyager shaft in the future, I'll take a picture and update this page.
