Z1300 General Help!

Last Update 3/29/07

If you're looking for the Site Map go HERETo Search this site and the zn1300.com site go HERE!  The search engine works just like any other on the web, but it searches just within the kz1300.com and zn1300.com domains.  It returns text searches only, you can't search for image names or URL's, but it can be a very effective way of finding just the information you're looking for as it searches all the bulletin boards and archive files (as I add them).  Google.com is a good place to search for specific images or image names.  The page to bookmark or add to your favorites is - kz1300.com/tech.html  as this particular page will have the most up to date links.

We almost always need to know the year of your bike in any question you submit, and usually the model too.  Parts are different between years many times depending on what it is.  For example, the 79'/80', 81' and 82'/83' all have different ignition systems; igniters and pickups both, and these KZ parts are all different from the ZN1300 as well.  The left side engine cover is a one year only part on an 81' as it has a window in it to set the timing and the 81' igniter and pickups are one year only parts.  The 82' pickups look the same as 84's, but one is a 4-wire plug, the other a 6-wire although the stator covers are the same as the ZN models and they do interchange.  There are many differences between the Z1300 overseas models and the KZ1300 US and Canadian models.  Most things interchange, some don't, so keep this in mind.

The ZN engine is quite a bit different than the Z or KZ engines; none of the exterior covers interchange except the valve cover and the stator covers as noted above.  The clutch cover is different, the mission cover - exhaust system, ignition coils, cam chain tensioner, swing arm, differential, bike frame, front forks, wheels and wiring harness are all different, and of course it has fuel injection and they even changed the cam timing on this engine.  So don't expect to use parts off a Voyager 1300 on an older KZ even though it's still basically the same 6 cylinder engine like the older bikes.  There was a lot of changes on the Voyager that keeps better than 95% of the ZN model parts from being used on an older bike.  The 82' upper and lower main engine halves are different than an 81' because of the right side stator cover though the 82' halves are probably the same as the ZN motor, though I'm not 100% sure.

79' and 80' parts are almost 100% interchangeable; the 2 most notable parts unique to the 79' is the 160mph speedometer, adjustable main jet needles; small stator, rotor and right engine cover; clutch cover has small oil level window that was changed to a larger window in 80'.  The 81' engine has a different crankshaft end on the left side with a larger end bolt diameter that will probably keep you from swapping it into an older motor.  I heard they went to larger rod or main journal diameters on newer cranks, but I don't have specifics.

The 81' ignition is a Hall Effect design with the ignition pick-ups on the left side, a unique to 81' left side cover and 81' only igniter.  The Tech Articles page has a side by side comparison of all years ignition parts.  81' and 82' engines came with a larger capacity oil pan than the older engines though SOME 80' B2 Touring models had the large capacity pan installed, but some didn't.  Voyagers also have a large capacity pan but I think it's shaped different than the KZ pan and will probably bolt on and work just fine except that you might have clearance problems preventing you from using it with the stock KZ exhaust.

To sum up, there are a lot of things to look at and read on this site before you start asking questions.  I add to the FAQ page and Links Page on a regular basis and these are the 2 most updated pages.  Any tech questions I get that are in need of an answer I'll submit to Paul or other members and once I get an answer I'll add the question and answer to the FAQ page.

NOTE: On these newer browsers I've noticed that they don't always display my large images in full size when you open an image from the thumbnails.  Once you click the thumbnail and open the larger image, if you 'mouse over' the image you should see a " + " symbol or some other indicator like a box with arrows usually on the bottom right edge of the image.  If you click on the indicator, then the image will expand to it's full size which displays full screen on computers that use a 800x600 resolution setting for the monitor.  If you click the indicator again it will go back to the smaller image. Some people use a resolution setting of 1024x768 or higher on their monitors and for those users the images will appear smaller in size instead of full screen.  You can change your monitor settings easily enough if you desire.  Also, the indicator I've noticed is slow to appear even after the image appears to of completely loaded.  The indicator in Netscape seems to be a lot faster to display than the one in Internet Explorer.
